 What Gauge Is This Bag?

To determine the average gauge of an individual bag, first weigh the bag using an accurate gram scale. Second, measure its overall width and length. Finally, use the following formula:

G=

Bag Weight in Grams x  30.5

Width x Length x Material Density

Material Density-

  • For LDPE and LLDPE use 0.920
  • For WMW HDPE use 0.950

For Example: for a LLDPE bag which you have weighed as 5.57 grams and measured as 24.2 inches in width and 24.7 inches in length, the average gauge is:

G=

5.57 x 30.5

= .309 mil

24.2 x 24.7 x 0.92

To Convert from mil to microns, to determine micron thickness, multiply your answer in mil by the constant 25.4

For Example: .309 mil = .309 x 25.4 = 7.85 microns
